Fallout 3
Fallout 3 brought the post-apocalyptic series from an isometric viewpoint into a fully three-dimensional open world, setting it amid the ruins of Washington, D.C., known as the Capital Wasteland. The player begins as a resident of an underground vault who, after their father's escape, emerges onto the surface and searches for him across a landscape full of radiation, mutants, slavers, and the remnants of human civilization. The opening sequence inside the vault doubles as character creation, since the player shapes their attributes and skill focus throughout childhood and adolescence.
The world is open practically from the moment the player steps outside, and it rewards curiosity. Collapsed subway stations, abandoned schools, laboratories, and small towns hide their own little stories told through terminals, logs, and the arrangement of objects, often entirely without dialogue. The combat system combines direct shooting with the tactical VATS mode, which stops time and lets the player spend action points on an aimed hit to a specific body part. Add to that ammunition management, weapon wear, radiation, the hunt for clean water, and moral choices that build karma, changing how factions react and who will join the player as a companion.
Technically the game built on the engine previously used in The Elder Scrolls series, and on the computers of the day it offered a large, continuous world at the cost of occasionally stiff animation and bugs that over time became part of the studio's reputation. On modern rigs a few community fixes are needed to make everything run smoothly, but otherwise the game still looks solid today thanks to its distinctive greenish color grading. Much of the atmosphere is carried by radio stations that play old American swing tunes across the devastated landscape, creating a contrast that became typical of the series. Reception was very strong, though part of the fanbase of the older entries criticized the shift toward action. Today it remains one of the best-built open worlds of its era.
