The post-apocalyptic series in full 3D for the first time; a Capital Wasteland of massive scale.

Fallout 3 moved the post-apocalyptic series from an isometric perspective into a full three-dimensional world, and on PlayStation 3 it offered one of the most sprawling games of its generation. The player starts as a resident of Vault 101 beneath the ruined Washington, D.C.; after their father escapes, they set out onto the surface and find themselves in the Capital Wasteland, a scorched land full of ruins, mutants, and warring factions. The world is open almost from the first minutes, the main quest can be postponed indefinitely, and many of the game's best moments lie in randomly discovered small towns, subway tunnels, and laboratories, where terminals and scattered items tell the story more than characters do.

Combat combines first-person shooting with the pausable V.A.T.S. system, in which the player spends action points on aimed shots at specific limbs, restoring some of the series' original tactical dimension. The character grows through S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes, skills, and perks, so you can play as a stealthy sniper, a negotiator, or a heavily armored bruiser with a minigun. Weapons wear down and are repaired using spare parts, ammunition and medicine are scarce early on, and the karma system reacts to how the player treats settlers and slavers alike. Side quests offer a surprisingly large number of resolutions, including uncomfortably morally ambiguous ones.

On PS3 the game ran somewhat worse than on the competing console, plagued by longer loading times and occasional glitches, yet the atmosphere worked without reservation: a faded green-gray palette, silence broken by the crackle of a Geiger counter, and radio broadcasts playing old songs create a combination players still remember today. Inon Zur's music works with sparse, dark passages that let the ambient sound stand out. At the time it was one of the best-reviewed titles of the year, and Fallout 3 fundamentally shaped the look of open-world RPGs for years to come. Today it looks technically dated, but the freedom of movement and the density of small stories scattered across the world still hold up.
