Katana ZERO
Katana ZERO is a fast-paced action platformer about a katana-wielding hitman who can see the near future and replay it until he finds a path that lets him survive. This ability translates elegantly into gameplay: every room is essentially a puzzle you solve through trial and error, since a single hit means death and an instant restart. Once you manage to clear an entire floor, the game shows you a replay of the whole action in one seamless take, instantly turning a string of embarrassing failures into an impressive action-movie scene.
Combat is simple but highly expressive. You slash with your katana, deflect bullets back at shooters, dodge-roll, throw objects, and slow down time in a pinch. Enemies are just as fragile as you are, so milliseconds and knowledge of the layout decide everything. Alongside the action, the game devotes considerable space to dialogue, where you can interrupt the speaker and choose responses, which affects the tone and even certain scenes. The narrative is fragmentary, dealing with trauma, medication, and memory loss, and leaves plenty of questions open, including the ending itself.
Visually it's pixel art with a bold neon palette, strong lighting, and effects reminiscent of damaged video footage. On PC the game runs with virtually no hardware demands and offers smooth movement along with comfortable control via gamepad or keyboard. The music is synthetic, pulsing, and tuned to an aesthetic associated with the eighties, and together with the visuals it forms a very cohesive whole. The game contains pronounced stylized violence, so it's definitely not for everyone. On release it earned praise for its combat system, pacing, and its willingness to tell a nonlinear story. Today it stands among the best-playing examples of the fast-platformer genre where a single hit means the end. A full playthrough takes only a few hours, but the game invites replaying, since the same room can be solved dozens of ways, and the pursuit of the most elegant solution is its own reward.
