A lightning-fast action slasher where a single mistake means death; the whole run replays like a movie.

Katana ZERO brought PlayStation 4 in 2019 a combination of lightning-fast action gameplay and a neon-lit neo-noir story that quickly earned a devoted fan base. The hero, a samurai with the ability to manipulate time, moves through rooms full of armed enemies who must be dispatched with a single sword stroke — but any mistake means instant death and a return to the start of the room. The game therefore builds on a principle of rapid memorization and improvisation, as the player gradually assembles the perfect run through a room like a choreography of dodges, deflected shots and precise strikes, after which the complete run through the whole mission plays back as a smooth, seamless action movie scene.

Visually the title combines pixel art with cinematic transitions and colorful neon lights that recall stylized 1980s action films and their visual language full of VHS artifacts and jump-cut editing. The electronic synthwave soundtrack perfectly complements the pace of the action and often shifts in real time according to what's happening on screen, reinforcing the feeling that the player is as much a part of the music as of the combat. The story, told through therapy sessions between missions, gradually reveals the dark and ambiguous background of the main character and engages with themes of addiction, manipulation, paranoia and an unreliable narrator, leaving the player to work out for themselves how much of the depicted memories is actually true.

Katana ZERO was very well received critically and became one of the most frequently mentioned indie titles of its time thanks to its combination of demanding but fair gameplay and a strong authorial style. Dialogue that can be interrupted with quick responses also gave the game an unusually lively, reactive feel even outside the fights themselves. Even years later it remains a reference point for the genre of fast action platformers built on the one-hit, one-death principle.

Why play it: For fans of fast action platformers built on the one-hit, one-death principle — demanding but fair gameplay paired with a strong authorial style and lively, interruptible dialogue.
