A return to claustrophobic horror, and the series' first entry in first-person perspective.

After several entries that pushed the series toward the action genre, Capcom returned to the roots of claustrophobic survival horror with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, while also shifting to a first-person perspective for the first time in the main line. Ethan Winters arrives at the decaying Baker family estate in the Louisiana bayous to search for his missing wife Mia, and finds himself held captive by a seemingly indestructible, violent family influenced by a parasite called the Mold.

The first-person view fundamentally changes the rules: the player cannot see around corners, must carefully lean to peek, and sound becomes the primary source of information about where the pursuer currently is. The estate is designed as a classic Resident Evil labyrinth full of locked doors, sought-after keys, and item boxes for storage, so the limited resources and the unpredictable, terrifying family patriarch Jack Baker create an atmosphere closer to horror classics like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre than to the series' earlier, more action-oriented entries. The game also supported full playability in virtual reality on PlayStation VR, which heightened the sense of physical presence in the terrifying environment to the point that, for many players, it became the most intense VR experience of the generation.

The grotesque, larger-than-life Baker family - with father Jack, mother Marguerite spawning swarms of insects, and son Lucas obsessed with traps - creates a gallery of unforgettable villains, with Jack becoming one of the most iconic characters in the entire series. A demo called Beginning Hour, released months before the full game, built extraordinary anticipation and became a viral phenomenon in its own right thanks to its hidden secrets and mysteries. Critics praised the return to a slower, tenser pace as a refreshing change for the series after years of leaning into action, the game became commercially very successful, and it relaunched Resident Evil as a respected horror brand, which subsequent entries and remakes went on to build upon.
