A precision platformer about climbing a mountain, a journey that serves as a metaphor for anxiety and depression.

Celeste is a precision platformer by Maddy Thorson and her small team about a young woman named Madeline who decides to climb Mount Celeste, and along the way faces not only deadly difficult jump sequences but also her own anxiety and depression, embodied by a dark version of herself. The controls are tuned down to the last detail - a double jump, a dash in the chosen direction, and wall climbing give the player precise tools capable of handling even the toughest passages, while the game generously offers instant respawns with no penalty for frequent dying, removing the frustration usually associated with difficult platformers. Every screen functions as a self-contained puzzle with one clean solution, so even after hundreds of falls the feeling remains that the mistake was always the player's own.

A pixel-art visual style with a distinct color palette for each chapter and music by Lena Raine that shifts with the situation give the whole experience an emotional rhythm. Alongside the main campaign, the game also offers extremely demanding B-Side and C-Side levels for players craving an even greater challenge, while an optional Assist Mode lets the game be slowed down or grants extra dashes so that truly everyone can reach the story. The side character Theo, met along the way up the mountain, and the narrator called Granny lend a sense of human warmth and companionship to what would otherwise seem a solitary climb.

The story sensitively and honestly addresses themes of mental health, self-acceptance, and overcoming one's own inner demons without lapsing into cheap sentimentality, and the final revelation of dark Madeline's true nature offers one of the most powerful treatments of this theme in the video game medium. Critics praised the flawless controls, the thoughtful level design, and the emotional depth, the game won Best Independent Game at the Game Awards, and it is still considered one of the best-crafted platformers of the modern era. The free Farewell expansion, released a year after the game, added an even more demanding and emotionally intense conclusion to Madeline's entire story.
