Resident Evil Outbreak
Resident Evil Outbreak brought a significant innovation to the series in the form of cooperative multiplayer, in which up to four players together make their way through a zombie apocalypse in Raccoon City, taking place in parallel with the events of previous entries in the series. The game offered several short scenarios, in which players choose from eight civilian characters, ranging from a waitress to a police officer to an actor, with each character possessing unique abilities and weaknesses affecting their survival style. The choice of character thus fundamentally changes the playthrough: one can open locked doors, another can carry more items or handle treating the wounded, so the same map offers a slightly different way out each time.
Online multiplayer, still rare on consoles at the time, allowed players to cooperate on solving puzzles, share limited resources, and jointly face hordes of infected, bringing a completely new social dimension based on communication and cooperation under pressure into the classic survival horror. Because the game lacked voice chat, players communicated using a set of predefined commands and gestures, which paradoxically created tense, almost silent teamwork amid the chaos. The game also introduced a virus infection system, where a character could become infected and their condition would gradually worsen if the player didn't find a cure in time, adding urgency to the whole playthrough of a scenario.
The visuals matched the series' standard, emphasizing the dark atmosphere of an abandoned city, and the scenarios, from a burning restaurant to a hospital and sewers, offered strikingly varied settings. Due to the technical limitations of the network infrastructure at the time and the need to purchase a network adapter for the PS2, the online features suffered from limited availability, yet Outbreak remains a significant experiment that foreshadowed later cooperative horror games and demonstrated the genre's potential for a shared experience. The game also received a direct sequel, File 2, which expanded the roster of playable scenarios and characters with further chapters of the zombie apocalypse in Raccoon City.
