An expanded version of the first fully 3D Resident Evil; a key chapter in the Ashford family story.

Resident Evil Code: Veronica was originally created for the Sega Dreamcast as the first entry in the series set fully in a 3D environment rather than pre-rendered backgrounds, and the expanded X version, supplemented with new scenes and improved graphics, arrived on PlayStation 2, allowing a much wider audience to experience a key chapter in the story of the Ashford family and the continuation of Claire and Chris Redfield's fates following the events of Resident Evil 2. The player follows Claire, imprisoned on an island facility belonging to the Umbrella Corporation, from which she tries to escape amid a zombie apocalypse while uncovering the dark secrets of the family behind the creation of the T-virus.

Gameplay-wise, the game remained faithful to the series' classic survival horror recipe, that is, limited ammunition, key-and-item-based puzzles, and a tense atmosphere reinforced by cinematic camera angles, though the full 3D environment allowed for a more dynamic camera than in earlier entries. The genuine room geometry also brought small but significant changes to the feel of the game: the camera could smoothly follow the character, lights cast moving shadows, and threats could now emerge from the depth of the space, not just from behind a fixed frame edge. The item chests, however, aren't linked together, so a poorly organized inventory can punish the player for dozens of minutes to come.

Switching between playable characters, Claire and later Chris, brought shifting perspectives on the same story and expanded the narrative scope with background on the Umbrella Corporation. The X version's visuals were improved on PS2 with sharper textures and new cutscenes explaining connections to later entries in the series. Code: Veronica X remains valued today as an important bridging point in the Resident Evil mythology and one of the last classic survival horrors before the arrival of the more action-focused fourth entry. The X version also added several new cutscenes clarifying Albert Wesker's relationship to the Umbrella organization, which was especially appreciated by longtime fans of the entire saga.
