Gran Turismo 4
Gran Turismo 4 is a monstrously vast sequel offering over seven hundred licensed cars and dozens of tracks, from the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife through mountain switchbacks to city circuits inspired by real-world metropolises. Polyphony Digital improved the driving physics model, added a Photo Mode allowing players to capture cars in otherwise inaccessible locations around the world, and the so-called B-Spec mode, in which the player doesn't sit behind the wheel but instead manages and instructs their AI driver as a team manager throughout the race. The infamously notorious license tests remain the entry point to the career, teaching the player braking points, the racing line, and throttle control in corners step by step.
The graphics were among the absolute cutting edge of what PlayStation 2 could offer, and the sheer amount of content was almost overwhelming, the game offered easily hundreds of hours of content between collecting cars, career championships, and license tests. Historic cars spanning decades into the past and modern supercars satisfied every car enthusiast, while support for steering wheels and other accessories underscored the ambition of simulation fidelity. Tuning gear ratios, tire pressure, or suspension stiffness turned the garage into a screen just as important as the track itself. Gran Turismo 4 is often called the definitive racing simulation of its generation, one where players spent endless hours tuning cars, collecting complete car classes, and chasing better lap times.
Development of the game stretched over four years, and during that time Polyphony Digital fine-tuned every detail, from engine sounds to the suspension physics model, which was also reflected in the longer wait between entries in the series. Gran Turismo 4 was also one of the first titles to support online features via an adapter for the PlayStation 2, though full-fledged multiplayer only arrived with later entries. The scope of content and technical precision still make it a favorite target for collectors and fans of the simulation genre today, who find in it a calm, methodical pace that modern racing games rarely offer.
