James Sunderland arrives in a foggy little town after a letter from his dead wife and faces monsters that are the embodiment of his own guilt. An oppressive atmosphere, the ingenious sound score by Akira Yamaoka and a story with several endings that deals with grief and punishment. The horror here does not lie in jump scares but in slowly mounting unease and psychological pressure. Its symbolism and subtext still spark endless analysis today. A timeless masterpiece.
