A revolution that redefined action horror; an over-the-shoulder camera instead of static angles.

A revolution that redefined action horror. The over-the-shoulder camera, the emphasis on aiming and the tense situations in a remote Spanish village full of the infected pushed the entire genre forward. Leon Kennedy rescues the president's daughter and faces an endless wave of enemies at a perfectly measured pace. Excellent gunplay, unforgettable bosses and tension down to the last bullet keep you gripped from start to finish. The perfectly balanced alternation of action and horror is unrivalled. One of the most influential and highest-rated games of all time.

GameCube was the lead development platform and is still regarded as the sharpest, most detailed version: textures, lighting, and animation smoothness all look their best there. PlayStation 2 received the game a few months later that same year, 2005, and added exclusive extra content — including the bonus Separate Ways mode starring Ada Wong and new weapons — but its weaker hardware forced a drop in texture quality, leaving it looking somewhat blurrier and running slightly less smoothly than the GameCube original. If you want Resident Evil 4 looking its absolute best, pick the GameCube version; if you want the most content, the PS2 extras are worth having.
