It expanded the original to gigantic proportions; over six hundred cars from Polyphony Digital.

If the first Gran Turismo proved that a genuine driving simulator could exist on a console, Gran Turismo 2 showed how far that idea could be pushed. It was bigger, richer, and in many ways more complete.

Polyphony Digital, led by Kazunori Yamauchi, bet above all on content, and on a scale that seemed unbelievable at the time — the lineup exceeded six hundred vehicles. From ordinary production cars to racing specials, all with carefully tuned behavior on the track. The game stayed true to its core concept: race, earn, buy and tune, collect licenses, and gradually build your dream garage.

The career mode was deep and satisfyingly addictive. Each championship you won pushed you closer to better cars and tougher challenges, so the „one more race“ loop kept players glued to the screen late into the night. Added to that were new tracks, including more demanding and varied environments.

The sequel thus expanded and refined everything that worked in the first entry, and confirmed Gran Turismo as the flagship of the racing-sim genre. For many fans this very episode remains the peak of the PlayStation era — the moment the series reached enormous scale without losing its soul.

Gran Turismo 2 is evidence that a sequel need not mean merely more of the same, but a genuine broadening of horizons.

Why play it: For the huge car roster, deep career mode, and refined driving feel that elevated the foundational first game to an even higher level.
