The third entry and the peak of the PS2 trilogy; weapons level up and change appearance and effect with use.

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal from 2004 is the third entry in the series and, for many fans, the peak of the PS2 trilogy. Insomniac Games perfected the combat system here to an absolute science, weapons level up with use and change both appearance and effect, so an ordinary pistol can eventually become a devastating super weapon. This gives the player motivation to rotate through the entire arsenal instead of relying on one trusted gun. The story brings Ratchet and Clank back against an empire led by the parodically over-the-top villain Dr. Nefarious, a cyborg obsessed with hatred for everything organic, who became one of the series' most beloved characters thanks to his theatrical, comedic nature.

New to this entry was a full online multiplayer mode allowing multiple players to battle over the PlayStation 2 network, and at a time when online console gaming was only just gaining traction, this was a significant technical ambition. Cutscenes with an ironic, detached tone, parodying TV shows and commercials, gave the game an unmistakable sense of humor, while the pace between planets, space battles, and ground shootouts sped up compared to previous entries. Side modes such as arena challenges and playful retro segments with Captain Qwark add variety and function as a change of pace. The variety of missions, sheer amount of content, and polished shooting feel made Up Your Arsenal a reference point for the action platformer genre.

It's still often called the best entry in the series on PlayStation 2, one that definitively cemented Ratchet and Clank's position among the console's key franchises. Technically, the game pushed the console's hardware to its limits for sprawling battle arenas with dozens of enemies at once and smooth transitions between space and planet surfaces. Up Your Arsenal still holds its place among the best platform action games of the PS2 generation and is remembered as the high point of Insomniac Games' work during their golden era.
