The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is a remaster of one of the most legendary point-and-click adventures in history, created by studio LucasArts under Ron Gilbert. The player takes on the role of would-be pirate Guybrush Threepwood, who on the Caribbean islands tries to become a real pirate, solves absurd puzzles, engages in insult sword-fighting, and meets characters whose lines adventure fans still quote today. The Special Edition added freshly drawn graphics, full voiced dialogue, and the ability to switch back to the original pixel art at any time, so the player can compare at any moment just how much the depiction of the Caribbean island and its inhabitants has moved on in twenty years.
Besides the graphical upgrade, the edition also offers commentary from the original developers, which can be played alongside the game itself so you can listen to memories of the game's creation straight from the people who made it - back then not yet aware of how fundamentally it would influence the whole adventure genre and LucasArts' own later output. The humor, puzzle pacing, and unforgettable dialogue of Monkey Island have become a benchmark point-and-click adventures are still measured against today, and thanks to that the series has seen several sequels.
On mobile it's a paid game with no ads, controlled directly by touch - the player taps on places and objects on screen instead of the classic mouse pointer, which suits this type of adventure naturally and the controls don't feel like a compromise.
Why play: For anyone who loves clever humor and classic adventures and wants to try the legend in more comfortable graphics without losing the single-button original.
