A black-and-white dark platformer full of deadly puzzles and an oppressive atmosphere.

Limbo is a black-and-white platformer from the Danish studio Playdead that throws the player, from the very first moment, into a dark forest full of deadly traps and puzzles. A nameless boy makes his way through a silhouetted world where every wrong step means instant and often graphically unpleasant death, and the player learns through trial and error which shadows hide a trap and which are just scenery. The game never directly explains its story, only hints at the boy's search for his lost sister, leaving the player to work out the meaning of each image for themselves.

The grayscale visual style, ambient sound design without traditional music, and the oppressive, almost existential atmosphere made Limbo, after its release, one of the most cited examples of how minimalist graphics and sound can tell a story more powerfully than dialogue. The game influenced an entire generation of art platformers that followed it, and physics puzzles involving weights, water, and light became its signature.

The mobile port is a paid game with no ads, controlled simply - with a virtual button for movement and jumping, or swipe gestures, which suits this puzzle-based platformer's slower pace better than fast-paced action titles. The game is fairly short, but memorable enough that players enjoy returning to it even years later to relive the oppressive atmosphere of their first playthrough.

Why play it: For players who want a short but powerfully atmospheric experience with death-by-trial-and-error puzzles rather than fast reflexes.
