Silent Hill
Silent Hill arrived on the PlayStation in 1999 and set an entirely different idea of dread against the reigning Resident Evil. Konami bet on fog that hid both the edges of the world and the console's limits, on a pocket radio hissing with static whenever a creature drew near, and on a flashlight that tore only a sliver of corridor out of the dark. Its hero, Harry Mason, was no soldier but a father searching for his missing daughter, so the clumsy combat became part of the atmosphere rather than a flaw. Underpinning it all was Akira Yamaoka's unsettling music and sound design, which turned into the series' signature.
The peak remains Silent Hill 2 from 2001. The story of James Sunderland, who receives a letter from a wife long dead, turned the town into a projection of personal guilt; the monsters, Pyramid Head among them, are symbolic rather than arbitrary. The third game followed on directly from the first, while Silent Hill 4: The Room experimented with a sealed apartment as both refuge and trap. After the original team dispersed, Western developers took over — Origins on PSP, Shattered Memories with its bold combat-free approach, and Downpour on seventh-generation consoles. Silent Hill still defines psychological horror, and its fingerprints are more visible on the independent scene than those of most major franchises.
