Silent Hill: The Short Message

psychologický horor 2024 Konami Silent Hill ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A short, intimate probe into guilt and mental anguish - an unusually personal psychological horror.

Silent Hill: The Short Message is a short, free episode in the Silent Hill brand that Konami released exclusively for PlayStation 5 in 2024 as an unconventional taste of the series' return to psychological horror. The player takes on the role of a young girl wandering through an abandoned, oppressive high-rise building covered in graffiti with messages about bullying, self-harm, and the mental struggles of young people – the game openly tackles cyberbullying, social anxiety, and the pressure social media places on today's youth, an unusually raw, personal, and socially topical subject for a series better known for supernatural horrors, closer to interactive drama than classic horror.

The gameplay is deliberately simple and almost combat-free: it involves slowly walking through dark, claustrophobic corridors, collecting text messages scattered across the walls, and fleeing from a monster that appears at key moments, forcing the player to hide under beds and in closets or run through narrow hallways. Visually, the game benefits from a modern engine that creates a dense atmosphere through precise use of light, fog, and detailed textures of decaying interiors, accompanied by a subtle yet suggestive soundscape and carefully chosen, melancholic music that heightens the sense of isolation felt by the main heroine.

Since it was a free title available through the PlayStation Store, the game drew attention mainly as a signal that the Silent Hill brand, after years of dormancy, is alive again and has further full-fledged projects in the works. It provoked mixed but largely positive reactions among players – they praised the courage to tackle a sensitive, generation-relevant topic and the dense atmosphere, while criticizing its short length, simple mechanics, and the bluntness of its horror scenes. Today the title is viewed primarily as a symbolic restart of the series and a demonstration of the direction modern psychological horror from Konami can take.
