Sonic X Shadow Generations
Sonic X Shadow Generations is an expanded release of the 2011 Sonic Generations remaster, adding a brand-new campaign devoted to Shadow, released on Xbox Series X and S by Sonic Team to mark the anniversary of the entire Sonic the Hedgehog series. In the classic, two-dimensional and modern, three-dimensional Sonic segments, the player races through iconic levels from both the old and new eras of the series at high speed, collects rings, defeats Doctor Eggman's robots, and completes acrobatic platforming sections built around speed and precise jump timing, while Shadow's campaign offers a darker story following on from his past in Sonic Adventure 2, standalone levels tailored to his movement style, and distinct abilities, including attacks based on chaos energy, a dash, and briefly slowing down time around himself.
On Xbox Series, the game runs in high resolution and with a smooth, stable frame rate, which is crucial for the fast, action-oriented Sonic segments, and reworked lighting and particle effects give the classic levels a more modern look without losing their original character and colourfulness. The soundtrack, combining remixed versions of famous melodies from the series' history with new, darker music composed specifically for Shadow's campaign, is one of the strongest and most praised aspects of the whole release.
Sonic Generations was praised on its original release as a celebration of thirty years of the series and a successful blend of classic 2D platforming with modern 3D action, appealing to both longtime fans who remembered Sonic from the Sega Genesis and new players who only knew his more recent adventures. The Shadow Generations expansion adds substantial new content to the package for fans of the popular character and shows that Sega can meaningfully revive and expand an older successful title instead of simply giving it a graphical polish with no added value.
Why play it: Fans of Sonic and newcomers alike will enjoy the blend of classic 2D platforming with modern 3D action, complemented by substantial new content featuring Shadow, which shows how meaningfully an older title can be expanded.
