Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars
Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars brings to Xbox Series X and S reworked versions of two cult Japanese RPGs from Konami from the late 1990s, until now difficult to access on modern hardware. The player leads a rebellion against the Scarlet Moon Empire in the first game and then, in the second, deals with a war between the states of Highland and Jowston, with a signature element of the series being the collection of over a hundred recruitable characters called Stars of Destiny, many of whom add their own side quests, and the building of a personal fortress as a base of operations and home for the whole party of companions. Turn-based battles combine classic six-character group clashes with large-scale army battles, a simpler strategic layer, and one-on-one duels between commanders.
On Xbox Series, the remaster offers reworked 2D graphics in higher resolution, a modernized menu interface, and the option to switch between the original and new look, while the story, dialogue, and the structure of missions and character recruitment remain faithful to the originals without any change of content. The atmospheric music, full of melancholy and hope and accompanying both key story twists and quiet moments in the fortress, was one of the strongest points of both games and still sounds distinctive and striking in its remastered form.
Suikoden and Suikoden II are still valued today for their elaborate political stories, morally ambiguous characters, and a strong emphasis on building a community of allies, which in the 1990s was a fairly unusual approach in a JRPG genre focused more on a single hero. The remaster makes both games, the second of which was long hard to find and highly prized by collectors, accessible to new players on modern hardware and is a reminder of how strong an influence the series had on later creators of Japanese RPGs and on the concept of characters shaping the development of the whole story.
Why play it: Fans of politically themed stories and morally ambiguous characters will enjoy a remaster that finally makes the long hard-to-find second installment accessible and recalls the series' influence on later JRPGs.
