PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is the title that made the battle royale genre famous worldwide, and it first arrived on Xbox One through the Game Preview program. A hundred players jump from a plane over a vast island, land without a single weapon, and must find everything in abandoned houses, warehouses, and military bases. The playable area then gradually shrinks under a relentless circle that forces survivors into an ever-smaller space, until the final minutes play out as a tense showdown between a few remaining players within a few dozen meters.
The game leans into a more realistic approach than its competitors. Shooting accounts for ballistics and bullet drop, sprinting exhausts the character, the loudness of footsteps gives away position, and getting into a car is a loud decision the whole area notices immediately. A huge part of the tension comes from long minutes where nothing happens at all, and the player just listens, watches the horizon, and guesses where others will move. It can be played solo, in duos, or in squads of four, with team play adding a system for reviving wounded teammates. The Xbox One version long struggled with smoothness and detail pop-in, though gradual updates improved it significantly.
Compared to its more colorful competitors, the atmosphere is stark, almost cold; music is virtually absent, and the main role is played by silence broken by distant gunfire. Contemporary reception was enthusiastic, mainly because of the concept's originality and the unpredictability of matches, with criticism aimed at the technical state. The game's influence is unmistakable, since practically every major shooter of the following years got its own battle royale mode. Today it's a title that plays slower and rougher than its successors. But that patience is its main asset, because a won match carries a weight you won't find elsewhere. Anyone wanting to try where the whole genre began has no other choice, and playing a squad of four with friends remains one of the most tense multiplayer experiences around.
