An absurd, freewheeling alternative to Grand Theft Auto with an in-depth character editor.

Saints Row 2 moved the series beyond being a mere Grand Theft Auto clone toward its own confidently absurd identity full of black humor and complete freedom of self-expression. After waking from a coma, the player returns to the fictional city of Stilwater, where they must rebuild the Third Street Saints gang, devastated by rivals who have since taken over the streets. Volition expanded on the previous installment with a deep character editor allowing the creation of a protagonist of virtually any appearance, gender, and behavior, which broadened the game's appeal to a much wider audience seeking distinctive self-expression in a virtual world.

Customization didn't stop at the face either – players could change clothing, tattoos, hairstyles, walk, and voice, and cars in the garages could be tuned just as thoroughly, turning a mere vehicle into another way to give the gang a face. Side activities took on an entirely new, exaggeratedly grotesque dimension – from a chase with an explosive septic truck to skydiving amid traffic or throwing yourself under passing cars for insurance fraud – setting the game apart from the more serious tone of competing open-world titles. Story progression is tied to respect earned through exactly these escapades, so the tomfoolery isn't a detour but the main road forward.

Two-player co-op allowed exploring the entire city and completing main story missions together, which was still rare in the genre and turned most missions into improvised theater. The game also retained more serious plot moments exploring loyalty and betrayal within the gang despite its overall lighthearted tone. Critics praised the enormous amount of content, the humor, and the freedom of customization, with reservations aimed mainly at the technical execution. Saints Row 2 firmly established the series as an alternative to GTA focused on fun and absurdity rather than realism, paving the way for an even crazier sequel.
