A prequel to the cult Nintendo 64 classic and one of the key Xbox 360 launch titles.

Perfect Dark Zero served as a prequel to the cult classic from the Nintendo 64 and became one of the key launch titles for the Xbox 360, demonstrating the new console's capabilities in a sci-fi first-person shooter. The player takes on the role of a younger version of agent Joanna Dark, before she joins the Carrington Institute, fighting against mercenaries and an alien conspiracy reaching all the way to the mysterious Skedar race.

Rare used the new generation's graphical power to create larger, more visually detailed levels than in the original game, with an emphasis on a cover system and a varied arsenal of futuristic weapons with dual firing modes, which remained a signature feature of the series – the same weapon can fire in bursts, plant proximity mines, or serve as a sniper rifle. The campaign could be played cooperatively by two players, either on split screen or online, which was far from standard on consoles at the time. The choice of difficulty also changed the number of objectives within each mission, so higher settings offered a literally different playthrough of the same level. The multiplayer component offered a wide range of modes for up to thirty-two players online, including variants with hireable bots and equipment purchases between rounds, which represented an ambitious technical undertaking on consoles at the time.

The game arrived after a long and troubled development, during which it went through several concept reworks and even a change of target platform, which was partly reflected in the uneven quality of the AI and some technical shortcomings at release. Even so, the graphical presentation and scope of the multiplayer ranked among the technically most ambitious elements of the Xbox 360's launch lineup. Critics received the game with mixed reviews, praising the ambition and multiplayer but criticizing the uneven pacing of the campaign. Perfect Dark Zero remains an interesting chapter in Rare's history and a testament to the difficulty of transitioning a cult franchise to a new generation of hardware.
