Notch's phenomenal sandbox reworked for the controller by 4J Studios.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition brought Markus Persson's (known as Notch) phenomenal sandbox game to Microsoft's console, opening up endless possibilities for building, mining, and survival to console audiences who previously had no access to the original PC version. Studio 4J Studios handled the game's adaptation for a controller, with an intuitive radial interface for selecting blocks and items replacing the PC version's keyboard shortcuts, making the game accessible even to players with no experience of computer controls.

The console version also added its own improvements that the PC original lacked for a long time – above all a built-in tutorial in the form of a starting instructional map and a clear crafting recipe table, so new players didn't need to keep a wiki open alongside the game. The core gameplay loop stayed faithful to the original – the player mines resources, builds structures out of cubic blocks, crafts tools and weapons, and faces nightly hordes of undead and other dangerous creatures in a procedurally generated, practically endless world. Worlds were limited in size compared to the PC version, which didn't bother the vast majority of players and provided smoother performance on older hardware.

Cooperative multiplayer for up to four players on split screen or eight players online allowed shared construction of large builds and joint survival, and for many families it became the main reason to turn on the console by the TV at all. Regular updates gradually added content from the PC version, including the Nether dimension, the Ender Dragon, and redstone mechanisms, so the game gradually caught up with the functionally richer computer variant. The console version became commercially extremely successful and brought Minecraft to millions of new players around the world. Critics praised the successful control adaptation and faithfulness to the original concept. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition proved that the sandbox phenomenon can work great outside its original PC platform as well.
