Ninja Gaiden Sigma

Akční hra (hack and slash) 2007 Team Ninja Ninja Gaiden ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h ⭐ Must-play

An enhanced port of one of the generation's most difficult and precise action titles.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is an enhanced version of the Xbox action game Ninja Gaiden, which Team Ninja brought to PS3 with improved graphics, a new playable character, and adjusted difficulty for a new audience. Playing as the ninja Ryu Hayabusa, the player fights through a series of relentless battles against demons, ninjas, and human soldiers using fast, technical combos, dodging, and parrying with a katana and other exotic weapons — the game ranks among the most difficult and precise action titles of its generation. A system for unlocking and upgrading weapons at a merchant between chapters gave the player room to tailor their equipment to their own playstyle.

The PS3 version added the playable character Rachel with her own set of hammer-based weapons, along with several new levels and bosses compared to the original Xbox version. The visuals were polished and ran more smoothly than the original, as Team Ninja used the platform transition to fix a number of technical shortcomings. The combat system demanded precision and knowledge of enemy movement patterns — mindlessly mashing buttons led to a quick death here, setting the game apart from the more accessible action games of the time. The dark, gothic atmosphere and intense soundtrack complemented the bloody, brutal tone of a game full of severed limbs and blood spatter.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma was critically praised as one of the most technically accomplished action titles of its generation and gave PS3 owners a rare chance to play a series that had previously been exclusive to Xbox. Its uncompromising difficulty and deep combat system inspired a number of later action games striving for similarly technical depth and precise controls. Even today it's recommended as a test of a player's true reflexes and patience — for someone willing to learn from their mistakes, retry the same section repeatedly, and gradually refine their technique.

Why play it: Anyone looking for a test of true reflexes and patience, paired with a deep combat system, will find Ninja Gaiden Sigma one of the most technically accomplished action titles of its generation.
