Metroid Prime Remastered

Akční adventura 2023 Retro Studios Metroid ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h ⭐ Must-play

Announced and released the same day — one of the most pleasant surprises on Switch.

Metroid Prime Remastered appeared completely out of nowhere—Nintendo announced it and released it digitally the very same day, making it one of the most delightful surprises on Switch. It's a modernized version of the 2002 game that translated the two-dimensional Metroid series into a first-person perspective without turning it into a shooter. Samus Aran lands on planet Tallon IV, moving through caverns, flooded Chozo ruins, lava fields, and frozen chasms while gradually gaining abilities that open up previously inaccessible paths. The structure is classic metroidvania: the map unravels like one giant, interconnected puzzle.

What matters most is the sense of isolation and discovery. Instead of constant firefights, most of the time is spent scanning the environment, reading logs of a long-extinct civilization, and noticing details like the reflection of Samus's face on her visor when light flashes across it. Combat works with switching between beams and missiles, target locking, and transforming into the Morph Ball, which turns the action into a platforming puzzle. The remaster brought modern dual-stick controls but also kept the original control scheme and a motion-aiming variant, so everyone can find what suits them.

Graphically, it was an exceptionally meticulous effort: models, textures, lighting, and effects were rebuilt from the ground up, and the game runs smoothly while staying faithful to the original art design. The ambient soundtrack, blending electronic soundscapes with echoes of old Metroid themes, remains a textbook example of game atmosphere. Reception was excellent, and many reviewers called it an example of how remasters should be done. Today, Metroid Prime Remastered works as a fully-fledged modern game—slow, focused, and unusually quiet in an age of loud blockbusters, which is exactly why it's so strong. For newcomers, it's also the easiest way to understand why the Prime series is credited with such influence: the way its map, environmental storytelling, and pacing of discovery come together has since appeared in dozens of games, though few have pulled it off so cleanly.
