Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Assassin's Creed Odyssey deepened the RPG direction started in Origins and set the game in ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens, where for the first time in the series the player could choose between two protagonists - the mercenary Alexios or the mercenary Kassandra - with fully voiced dialogue choices affecting the story's course and its ending. The vast map, encompassing hundreds of islands of the Aegean Sea, is connected by sea travel in the style of earlier series entries like Black Flag, complemented by grand naval battles and massive clashes between the armies of Sparta and Athens that the player can actively join.
The RPG systems offer greater freedom in building a character based on stealth kills, archery, or direct combat, romantic relationships with side characters, and a mercenary system that hunts the player according to their notoriety, so slaughtering guards has tangible consequences hours later. The so-called Odyssey Plus system later let players freely adjust the difficulty of individual combat and story elements, Ubisoft's response to criticism over the balance of RPG systems against the series' more traditional style. The scope of content and the game's length are among the largest in the entire series, which sparked some players' discussions about padding and the presence of microtransactions.
The Fate of Atlantis expansion additionally transported players to the fully fantastical setting of mythical Atlantis and the Greek underworld, showing Ubisoft's willingness to experiment with mythological elements far beyond historical realism. Visually the game bet on a vividly colored, postcard-like Greece with olive groves, marble, and turquoise sea, thanks to which even simple sailing between islands becomes entertainment in its own right. Critics praised the elaborate world, Melissanthi Mahut's performance as Kassandra, and the depth of the RPG mechanics; the game became one of the commercially most successful entries in the series.
