Dreams
Dreams pushed Media Molecule, the creator of LittleBigPlanet, and its concept of player-made content to an entirely new level with a tool that lets players create practically anything - from platformers to shooters to music videos and cinematic demos - using an intuitive sculpting interface controlled with the Move motion controller or a standard gamepad. Modeling works by shaping and blending matter in three-dimensional space, complemented by tools for animation, logic, music, and sound, so a single person can handle the entire production pipeline of a small game.
The game itself offers a short, dreamlike campaign called Art's Dream as a showcase of the engine's capabilities, but the real core of the experience is the community ecosystem, which lets millions of players share, remix, and rate each other's creations, forming an ever-growing library of community-made content. The Dreamiverse system let players browse created content by genre, popularity, or community recommendation, creating an environment closer to a curated gallery than a typical video game menu. Media Molecule also regularly selected and promoted exceptional player creations, inspiring real artistic and gaming careers and showing just how far a tool can be pushed beyond its creators' original vision once placed in the community's hands.
The technical sophistication of the tools allowed for surprisingly elaborate projects, including complete JRPGs, horror adventures, and experimental music, making Dreams function more as a creative platform than a traditional video game. Despite the technical brilliance and enthusiastic response from the creative community, the game remained somewhat niche for the wider mainstream audience due to its steep learning curve and the fact that results were tied to a single platform. Critics praised the incredible ambition and possibilities of the tool, and Dreams is still cited today as proof of the creative potential the PlayStation 4 hardware was able to unlock.
