Hand-painted animation in the spirit of 1930s rubber-hose cartoons, with boss fights that spare no one.

Cuphead, created by brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer of Studio MDHR, staked everything on a completely unique visual concept - the entire animation was hand-drawn and hand-painted using techniques imitating rubber-hose American cartoons from the 1930s, complemented by a period jazz swing soundtrack recorded by live musicians. Cuphead and his brother Mugman, after losing a bet with the Devil, must pay off their debt by collecting souls from a gallery of bizarre bosses scattered across a stylized map, which makes the game primarily a series of intense boss fights interspersed with classic run-and-gun levels.

Every fight requires memorizing attack patterns and precise dodging, the parry mechanic for deflecting pink objects further expands the defensive options while also charging a super attack, and the difficulty ranks among the notoriously high even for experienced genre players. Optional ammunition types, charms, and various shot variants let the player tailor their approach to a specific opponent, so defeating the toughest bosses is as much a matter of proper preparation as of reflexes. Cooperative two-player gameplay also let extremely demanding fights be shared between two people, so the game also worked as a beloved social activity beyond a purely solo experience.

Development itself took the Moldenhauer brothers nearly seven years and required selling the family home to help finance the project, which, after release and massive commercial success, turned into a legendary story of independent game creation. The unmistakable visual style drew attention even beyond the core gaming community, and the game became a symbol of how strongly an art direction can define the identity of an independent title. Critics praised both the breathtaking animation and the precision of the boss designs, and commercial success led to the Delicious Last Course expansion as well as its own animated series. Today Cuphead comes across as a title that cannot age, because its look was already deliberately ninety years old at the time of release.
