Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 marked CD Projekt Red's move, after the triumph of The Witcher 3, from fantasy to the dark, neon-lit Night City, a metropolis full of corporate greed and technological transhumanism, where mercenary V teams up with the digital ghost of legendary rocker Johnny Silverhand, stored in his own mind thanks to a dangerous biochip. The game combines a first-person view with RPG elements, lets the player customize their build through cybernetic implants, hacking, or direct confrontation, and offers extensive branching of dialogue and missions depending on the chosen approach. The city's division into districts with their own architecture, gangs, and social climate makes Night City one of the most densely built game cities ever.
The release on the older console generation was marred by serious technical problems - frequent crashes, bugs, and insufficient optimization led to the game's temporary removal from the PlayStation Store and a wave of criticism directed at overly ambitious marketing. The extensive fixes that followed, the next-gen update, and the Phantom Liberty expansion featuring Idris Elba gradually turned public opinion around, and the game became a respected title whose atmosphere, main story, and performances are still praised today. The Cyberpunk 2077 case became a textbook example of how a long road to redemption can turn disappointment into an acclaimed comeback.
Keanu Reeves's performance as Johnny Silverhand, shot with dedication comparable to Hollywood productions, remains one of the game's strongest assets since launch, while Night City's visual design, inspired by the classic cyberpunk genre of the eighties, set a new aesthetic standard for the entire genre. The accompanying anime series Edgerunners by studio Trigger also brought a new audience to the game and indirectly helped turn public opinion in the title's favor. Years later, Cyberpunk 2077 feels like a game whose greatest strength was never the technology, but its story about the finiteness of life in a city that promises immortality.
