An action racing game built on tense duels and fast, adrenaline-fueled driving.

Need for Speed: The Run is an entry in the popular racing series from Black Box that departed from pure circuit racing toward a framing story about an illegal race across the United States from the west coast to the east coast. The player takes part as a driver fleeing both debts and the law, giving the game a narrative backbone with cinematic cutscenes and a smaller cast of supporting characters.

The driving itself combines classic arcade racing on public roads, highways, and city streets with changing weather conditions and heavy traffic, including police chases that regularly weave into the route and force the player to react quickly to sudden obstacles. New to the series were short action segments outside the car, in which the player controls the character during an escape from danger through simple quick reactions, meant to heighten the cinematic feel of the whole story and bring the game closer to the action-adventures popular at the time. The game used the then-advanced Frostbite engine, which gave it a visually very impressive environment ranging from snowy mountains through big-city streets to desert landscapes, driven by a dynamic shift of time of day and weather over the course of the individual legs of the crossing.

Critical reception was mixed – reviewers praised the visuals and the idea of tying a cross-continental route together into one continuous story, but criticized the short length of the main campaign, the somewhat shallow story, and the action sequences outside the vehicle, which felt more like a distracting add-on than a full-fledged game mechanic. The Run thus remains remembered mainly as a visually ambitious but story- and content-wise not fully realized experiment within the long history of the Need for Speed series. It did, however, include traditional multiplayer races and challenges that a portion of players grew fonder of than the linear campaign itself, which was rather shorter in scope compared to earlier entries in the series built around free repeated racing.
