Dead Space
Dead Space sends engineer Isaac Clarke aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura, which has stopped responding to hails, and what the crew found on the surface of a distant planet has since turned its members into necromorphs, disfigured organisms assembled from human bodies. The game builds on the claustrophobia of narrow corridors, cut power, and sounds that seem to come from somewhere in the ventilation, leaving the player practically no moment of calm. The narrative is restrained, and most of the horror comes from the environment, messages written in blood, and the logs of crew members who slowly slid into madness.
The key mechanic is dismembering limbs. You can't stop necromorphs by shooting them in the head — you have to cut off their arms and legs, primarily with a mining plasma cutter with a rotating beam. Added to that are stasis, which slows down both enemies and mechanisms, and kinesis for manipulating objects, so an improvised projectile can be anything lying around on deck. Another excellent idea is the fully diegetic interface: the health meter glows along the suit's spine, ammo counts are projected in mid-air, and the inventory opens as a hologram, so the game is never interrupted by a pause menu and the tension never lets up.
On PlayStation 3 the game felt technically advanced thanks to its handling of darkness, particle effects, and especially its outstanding sound design, which in vacuum sequences falls into total silence broken only by breathing inside the helmet. At the time it was very well received and quickly earned a reputation as one of the best horror games of its era, spawning an entire series. Even today it holds up without reservation: it has excellently measured pacing, can still surprise on a second playthrough, and its bleak, cosmic desolation has aged considerably better than most jump-scare horror. The Ishimura also functions as a single connected space the player returns to and gets to know, so by the end of the game the ship feels almost intimately familiar, even soaked in blood.
