Battlefield 1942
Battlefield 1942 set a grand vision of wartime chaos against the backdrop of World War II in a way no other shooter offered at the time. Instead of closed corridors, it came with sprawling maps like Wake Island, El Alamein, or Battle of the Bulge, across which players move on foot, in tanks, jeeps, boats, and aircraft. It was precisely this freedom of movement and the interconnection of infantry with vehicles that defined the game and became the foundation the whole series still stands on today. Up to 32 players on a server split into two teams and classes - assault, medic, engineer, sniper, tank crewman, and pilot - each fulfilling a different role within the broader tactical whole.
Technically, the game ran on the proprietary Refractor engine and felt generous for its time: open spaces, noticeable explosions, and dense smoke gave the battles a dramatic edge, though the graphics themselves were more functional than flashy. The audio, with battlefield noise and soldiers' voices, only underscored the atmosphere, while the music stayed more in the background, mainly accompanying the menus. The expansion packs Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of World War II expanded the roster of fronts, vehicles, and weapons and kept the community active for years to come. The main game mode was Conquest, where teams control points on the map and gradually deplete the opposing team's ticket count of lives, which became a standard later adopted by subsequent entries in the series.
The contemporary reception was extremely positive - Battlefield 1942 became one of the most-played multiplayer titles of its time and founded the genre of large-scale vehicular shooters that was later developed further by other entries in the series as well as competing brands. Today the game is naturally dated in both graphics and controls, but its legacy is evident in every subsequent Battlefield - from the classes to the vehicles to the emphasis on team coordination on large maps. For those interested in the genre's history, it's an essential stop, even though active play today is kept alive mainly by community servers and fan projects. It's also worth noting that the popular Desert Combat modification, transposing the game into modern desert warfare, partly inspired the direction Battlefield 2 later took.
Why play it: For those interested in the history of the vehicular shooter genre, whose legacy is visible in every later Battlefield, even though the game is kept alive today mainly by community servers and fan projects.
