Battlefield 2 moved the series away from historical wars into the modern era and became one of the most influential multiplayer shooters of its generation. Players fight as fictional factions - the US military, the Chinese military, or the loosely defined MEC coalition - on large maps combining infantry, armored vehicles, and aircraft. The key innovation was the commander system, where one player coordinates the team from a bird's-eye view, calls in artillery strikes, places supply points, and issues orders to individual squads, pushing the game from chaotic firefights toward deliberate tactical cooperation.

The game introduced a detailed system for unlocking weapons and abilities based on experience with a given class, and placed heavy emphasis on communication between four-person squads via voice chat and a map-marking system. On the Refractor 2 engine the game looked very good for its time, with impressive explosion and destruction effects, and despite its higher demands it ran smoothly on hardware of the era. The sound design, with realistic battle noise and clear commander callouts, was among the best the genre offered at the time, and maps like Karkand or Mashtuur City became legendary arenas of the esports scene, hosting tournaments in both team and clan play.

Battlefield 2 received exceptionally positive reception and became a reference point for the entire genre of large multiplayer shooters - its class, commander, and squad systems were adopted by many later entries in the series as well as competing games. It also had an enormous impact on the modding scene, which produced expansions like Project Reality that pushed combat simulation even closer to realism. Today the game officially no longer works because its servers have been shut down, but the community keeps it alive through unofficial servers, and for veterans it remains one of the most significant titles in the genre's history.
