DICE
DICE, a Swedish studio based in Stockholm, is a name inseparably tied to the Battlefield series and to the large-scale multiplayer battles that have defined the war-action genre on PCs and consoles since the start of the 21st century. While the competition long relied on linear campaigns, DICE bet on sprawling battlefields, vehicles, and environmental destruction, creating a counterpart to the Call of Duty series. For genre fans, the studio is synonymous with massive online battles where the outcome is decided by teamwork and large-scale tactics rather than shooting mechanics alone, and where players learn to use terrain, vehicles, and collapsed buildings as part of their own strategy.
History
The studio Digital Illusions, later renamed Digital Illusions CE and known by the abbreviation DICE, was founded in Sweden in the early 1990s and in its first years worked across various genres, including racing and sports games, before its direction changed fundamentally with the arrival of the Battlefield series. DICE entered the war genre precisely through this series, whose first major entry, Battlefield 1942, placed players in the Second World War and combined infantry, vehicles, and aircraft on a single map at a scale that had no equal on PCs at the time. The game became one of the first truly popular multiplayer titles built around large vehicle battles and laid the foundation for the studio's entire design philosophy. Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield 2 followed, expanding the class and commander-role system, adding more sophisticated team communication, and cementing the series' position as the main rival to Call of Duty in the multiplayer shooter segment.
The move to the then-current console generation brought Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which popularised destructible environments and, for the first time, brought the series closer to a wider console audience. Battlefield 3 then introduced the studio's own Frostbite technology, which enabled more realistic graphics, more extensive environmental destruction, and more advanced sound and lighting simulation, and became the backbone of later entries as well as a number of other Electronic Arts games outside the Battlefield series. Battlefield 4 deepened this direction further, despite a rocky launch marred by technical problems.
Battlefield 1, released in 2016, unexpectedly moved the series to the First World War, and through its combination of an unusual historical period, strong atmosphere, and an extensive multi-character campaign, it became one of the series' most commercially successful entries. Battlefield V then returned to the Second World War with an emphasis on smaller, more tactical engagements, more elaborate cover destruction, and live services in the form of seasonal content, reflecting the broader trend in online shooters of the time, where games sought to retain players long-term through regular updates rather than a one-off release.
Today
DICE has been part of publisher Electronic Arts since 2006 and remains the lead studio responsible for the Battlefield series, on whose development it today often collaborates with other internal EA teams spread around the world, which has become the standard model for developing the series' major games. Even after more than two decades, the Battlefield brand retains its position as one of the main pillars of the large-scale online war-game genre, and the Frostbite technology the studio developed remains one of the publisher's key tools, used for other franchises as well. For many players, the name DICE remains, to this day, above all a guarantee of sprawling battlefields and destruction, on which the series' multiplayer has been built from the very beginning.
