The flying city of Columbia instead of Rapture; Elizabeth and tears between realities.

BioShock Infinite leaves behind the underwater Rapture and moves players to the flying city of Columbia, a utopia built on nationalism and religious fanaticism in the early twentieth century. The player takes on the role of former agent Booker DeWitt, tasked with rescuing a mysterious girl named Elizabeth, who has the ability to open tears between parallel realities - a mechanic that becomes central to both the combat and the storytelling. The relationship between Booker and Elizabeth gradually deepens over the course of the game, and Elizabeth also acts as an active companion in combat, tossing the player ammo, health, or money, and opening tears that summon weapons or cover.

Combat combines firearms with so-called Vigors, an equivalent of the plasmids from previous games, and movement around the city is enabled by Skyhooks and rail lines called Sky-Lines, along which the player zips between the floating buildings. Visually, it is one of the most distinctive titles of its time thanks to its bright colors and sunny, seemingly idyllic atmosphere of Columbia, which contrasts with the darkness of the story hidden beneath the surface. The musical side combines period songs adapted for the era with an original atmospheric score and is among the most highly praised elements of the game.

BioShock Infinite received exceptionally positive reception and was praised above all for its story, its way of conveying themes through the environment, and its unexpected, complex ending exploring the idea of parallel worlds. Many players and critics rank it among the best story-driven games of its generation, and its impact on how video games are perceived as a storytelling medium was felt even outside the gaming community. Even today, Infinite remains a frequently cited example of how an action game can combine gameplay with an ambitious philosophical and social theme, and the later Burial at Sea add-on additionally connected the story with the world of the original Rapture.

Why play it: For players seeking a story-driven game that combines action gameplay with an ambitious philosophical theme and an unexpected, complex ending about parallel worlds.
