Claustrophobic action based on the film; darkness, scarce ammo, and tension from attacks in the shadows.

Alien 3 is an action platformer for the Sega Mega Drive from 1993, developed by Probe Software, loosely following the film of the same name. The player takes on the role of Ellen Ripley, trapped on a prison planet infested with xenomorphs, and must make their way through the claustrophobic corridors of the prison complex, looking for prisoners to rescue, collecting weapons, and facing alien creatures hidden in the shadows and ventilation shafts. Gameplay is built on shooting and platforming movement, with limited visibility and tension from sudden attacks playing a key role in evoking the film's atmosphere. Ripley has access to a gradually expanding arsenal including a flamethrower and grenades, but ammunition is scarce, forcing the player to pick fights carefully and sometimes avoid an attack rather than waste limited supplies.

Technically the game draws on dark, atmospheric graphics with an emphasis on shadows and industrial environments, accompanied by anxious, minimalist music and sound effects that heighten the sense of danger. The difficulty is high, partly due to the limited ammunition and the need to manage health carefully, placing the game among the more demanding entries of the genre on this platform. The violent elements and dark tone match the horror origins of the source material and aim the title more at older players than at the younger audience that other Mega Drive output targeted.

Contemporary reviews rated the game as a decent, atmospheric adaptation of the license, albeit not without reservations about the controls and pacing. Today it's remembered mainly as one of the better video game attempts to bring the atmosphere of the Alien film series into the eight- and sixteen-bit era's gaming medium, thanks to its grim atmosphere and emphasis on tension over pure action. Unlike later licensed games, the Mega Drive version favored a slower, more deliberate pace, which still sets it apart from most action titles inspired by nineties film blockbusters.

Why play it: For fans of a grim atmosphere and a more deliberate pace instead of pure action, Alien 3 offers one of the better attempts to bring the tension of the film series to the Mega Drive.
