A Zelda-like with animal companions; each animal has its own ability for combat and puzzles.

Crusader of Centy is a top-down action RPG released in 1994 for the Mega Drive, sold in Europe under the title Soleil. The game follows in the spirit of classic Zelda-likes – a young hero travels through an open world, completes quests in villages, delves into dungeons, and gradually collects equipment that opens up new paths. A key difference from similar titles is the animal companion mechanic: along the way, the player tames various animals, each with its own unique ability, and summons them to their side in combat and when solving puzzles. This system adds pleasant variety to both combat and exploration, since choosing the right companion often decides success in a given situation and forces the player to think about which animal best suits the passage at hand.

Technically, the game benefits from the late Mega Drive era – the color palette is rich, the sprite work clean, and character animations smooth. The music rounds out a fairy-tale, slightly melancholic atmosphere that sets the title apart from the darker, rawer RPGs of its time. The pacing is well balanced, and the dungeons are neither overly large nor labyrinthine, so the game stays accessible even to players who usually lack the patience for longer Japanese RPGs with endless grinding.

At release, the title got somewhat lost among the competition, since it arrived near the twilight of the console's lifespan, when media and player attention had already shifted elsewhere. Among genre fans, though, it gradually earned a reputation as one of the finest action RPGs on the Mega Drive. Today it is prized precisely for its inventive animal companion system and for how elegantly it combines a relaxed atmosphere with thoughtfully designed puzzles – it belongs among the titles worth rediscovering even decades after release. The player can also mix and match animal companions as a given passage requires, whether that means leaping across chasms, hacking through bushes, or revealing hidden paths, which keeps the game inventive from start to finish.

Why play it: Thanks to its inventive system of animal companions that can be combined as each passage demands, Crusader of Centy ranks among the finest action RPGs on the Mega Drive and is worth rediscovering today.
