Alien Breed / Tower Assault
Claustrophobic corridors of a space station, flickering lights, the echo of footsteps — and then that sound that freezes your blood: the aliens are approaching. Alien Breed and its expanded form Tower Assault are a clear tribute to cinematic horror sci-fi and at the same time one of the most gripping action experiences the Amiga offered.
The game puts you in the role of a soldier fighting his way through infested complexes from a top-down view. You mix shooting with elements of exploration and resource management — you collect credits, buy ammunition and equipment at terminals, look for keys and try to survive ever more desperate onslaughts of alien creatures. What Alien Breed excels at is atmosphere: tension, limited resources and a constant sense of threat make every corner a potential trap. Tower Assault expands this concept with a more branching level structure and greater freedom of progress.
Behind the series stands the studio Team17, a name inseparably linked with the Amiga and which later became famous especially for the Worms phenomenon. Alien Breed was among their early successes and helped build the studio's reputation as a creator of polished, playable arcade action. A key element was also two-player cooperation — surviving together in the infested corridors was an unforgettable experience that foreshadowed the later popularity of cooperative shooting games.
Culturally the series perfectly caught the wave of fascination with the alien threat unleashed by the Alien films. The combination of atmospheric horror with action gameplay was rare on home computers and Alien Breed became for many players a gateway to this subgenre. The series continued with several instalments and later received a more modern treatment as well.
For retro players today Alien Breed: Tower Assault represents a great reminder of how tension, tactics and shooting can be combined. It is demanding, atmospheric and rewards cautious, thoughtful progress as much as quick reflexes.
Why play it: Gripping cooperative action with a dense sci-fi horror atmosphere from the legendary studio Team17 — one of the jewels of the Amiga library.
