Wonder Boy in Monster World

Akční adventura / RPG 1991 Westone Wonder Boy ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h ⭐ Must-play

The fifth Wonder Boy entry shifts toward RPG; buying weapons and spells drives the character forward.

Wonder Boy in Monster World is the fifth installment in the popular Wonder Boy series and also one of the most cohesive action-adventures on the Mega Drive. The player takes on the role of a young hero who travels through a fairy-tale world full of towns, caves, and towers, fights monsters with a sword, buys and upgrades equipment with gold he has amassed, and gradually unlocks new areas thanks to items earned by completing quests. Compared to earlier entries in the series, the game places greater emphasis on exploration and RPG elements, especially on buying weapons, shields, and spells, thanks to which the hero noticeably grows stronger between levels.

Visually, it's one of the most attractive games of the Mega Drive's early era – the color palette is vibrant, the environments varied, and the designers had fun with the details of each town and its inhabitants. The music has a cheerful, fairy-tale flavor that perfectly complements the game's lighthearted atmosphere, even though the difficulty of the combat and bosses can catch players unexpectedly off guard. The controls are precise, and platforming sections blend well with the freedom of movement across a more open world map.

At release, the game was well received as a natural continuation of the successful series and is still considered one of the highlights of action RPGs on the Mega Drive. Its influence is visible in later genre titles that combined action combat with gradual character growth and an open world. Wonder Boy in Monster World remains a game worth recommending today thanks to its timeless design, welcoming difficulty curve, and unmistakable fairy-tale atmosphere. Besides sword combat, the game also offers small puzzles tied to using recently purchased equipment, so returning to previously visited areas with a new item often unlocks shortcuts or hidden treasures. The gradual unlocking of new weapons and armor also changes the hero's visual appearance, giving the player a tangible sense of reward for the gold they've gathered, and the transitions between areas are smooth, without unnecessary loading screens holding things up.

Why play it: Timeless design, a welcoming difficulty curve, and puzzles built around returning to older areas with new equipment make Wonder Boy in Monster World a recommendable classic even today.
