A Treasure boss-rush; intensity to the max.

Forget ordinary levels, forget catching your breath — Alien Soldier is essentially one endless chain of boss fights that grabs you by the throat and does not let go. The studio Treasure, renowned for pushing the SEGA Mega Drive to extremes, created here in 1995 one of the most intense works of its entire legendary career.

The concept is brilliantly simple and brutal at the same time: the game leads you through roughly twenty-five bosses with an absolute minimum of classic connecting passages between them. Almost every moment is thus a fight to the death against a giant, aggressive monster. The pace is dizzying, the screen overflows with projectiles, and you must constantly switch weapons, dodge and search for opponents' weaknesses.

Treasure were famous for their feel for boss fights, and here they took their skill to the absolute maximum. Every enemy has its own attack patterns that must be learned, and the game mercilessly punishes any inattention. It is a notoriously demanding title that assumes you will learn from your mistakes and return repeatedly until you master every pattern in detail.

Visually and mechanically it is a showcase of what the Mega Drive could do in the hands of true experts. The game runs briskly, the explosions and effects are impressive, and the overall sense of intensity is exceptional to this day. It is no wonder that Alien Soldier built a cult status among lovers of challenge.

An important fact is that the title was released only in Japan and Europe; the North American market did not officially get it. That long made it a semi-hidden treasure in the West, known only to the initiated. Today, thanks to digital re-releases, it is more accessible, but its reputation as a relentless challenge remains.

Why play: If you love boss fights and seek pure, uncompromising intensity from the masters at Treasure, this is boss-rush in its purest form.
