Decap Attack
Decap Attack is a comic-book action platformer that Vic Tokai created for the Sega Mega Drive in 1991, based on the Japanese original Magical Hat no Buttobi Turban de Pon. The player controls a mummy named Chuck D. Head, who upon waking from his tomb discovers that his head is detachable and can be used as a weapon – thrown at an enemy, or put back on when lost. This mechanic gives the game a unique comedic-horror flavor and adds a layer to otherwise classic platforming, as the player fights through levels full of monsters, skeletons, and other spooky characters. Besides throwing his head, Chuck also has claws for close combat, so the player can choose between ranged attacks and a faster, riskier approach depending on the situation.
The visual style combines darker backdrops of graveyards and haunted mansions with a lighthearted, cartoonish character design, making the game feel more playful than scary. The level design is straightforward but offers varied environments and a few interesting bosses, while the music keeps a brisk, slightly grotesque atmosphere going. The controls are simple and accessible even to less experienced players, the difficulty rises gradually, and the game is spiced up with small bonus sections between the main levels.
Decap Attack was not among the Mega Drive's best-selling titles, but thanks to its distinctive hero and inventive design it caught the attention of fans of early console platformers. Today it's seen as an endearing example of the genre from the early nineties – a slightly B-movie but honestly crafted title worth trying for anyone who enjoys retro platformers with a touch of black humor. Thanks to his striking design, Chuck D. Head became one of the more recognizable, if minor, mascots of the console alongside Sonic and other Sega heroes of the time.
Why play it: Anyone who enjoys retro platformers with a touch of black humor and a distinctive hero will appreciate this honestly crafted, slightly B-movie title with one of the Mega Drive's more recognizable mascots.
