Rolan's Curse
Rolan's Curse is an action RPG from Athena that puts players in the role of Prince Rolan, setting out to rescue Princess Sarahn, kidnapped by an evil sorcerer. The game combines real-time sword combat with classic RPG elements – the character gains experience and levels up, finds better weapons and armor, and buys equipment and healing items in castles and villages. The world is divided into several interconnected areas with their own enemies and bosses, giving the game a structure reminiscent of a simplified action version of Zelda, with progress between areas often gated behind finding a key item or defeating that area's guardian.
On the Game Boy's monochrome screen, the game relies on legible, fairly detailed sprites and a clear maze of corridors and rooms that the player gradually learns to navigate even without a map. The pace is faster than purely turn-based RPGs; combat demands both skill and tactical timing of attacks and dodges, and the player must also manage a limited supply of healing potions, carefully rationed before the tougher stretches. The music is simple but functional and holds the atmosphere of a dark fairy-tale fantasy well, in which an ordinary prince gradually becomes a seasoned hero able to face much stronger opponents. At release, it was one of many attempts to bring a fuller gaming experience to the Game Boy beyond simple arcade diversions, and it found its own following among action-RPG fans who appreciated its honestly tuned difficulty.
Rolan's Curse isn't a widely known game today, but among collectors and fans of early portable RPGs it has a reputation as a solid, honestly crafted title with its own charm. It also spawned a direct sequel, which shows it earned enough of a following in its time for the publisher to invest in a second installment and expand Prince Rolan's story with another chapter. For today's player picking it up via emulator, it offers a pleasantly compact adventure without unnecessary padding and with a clearly defined goal at the end of each area.
