Blinx 2: Masters of Time and Space
Blinx 2: Masters of Time and Space is the sequel to the platformer Blinx: The Time Sweeper, created for Xbox in 2004 by the Japanese studio Artoon, founded by former Sonic Team developers. The main hero, time-sweeping cat Blinx, once again sets out into platforming worlds equipped with a special weapon that allows manipulation of time - the player can stop, rewind, fast-forward, or record and replay the surrounding action, creating unique puzzles based on combining these abilities with classic jumping and item collecting. Unlike the first game, the sequel simplified the control of time abilities, added a clearer level structure, and tried to appeal to a wider audience, which however required reducing some of the more complex mechanics for which the first game was praised. The game received mixed to slightly above-average reviews from critics, who praised the originality of the concept but criticized camera problems and uneven difficulty. Commercially, Blinx 2 never came close to matching the first game, which had been one of the faces of the Xbox launch, and the series never received another sequel. Nevertheless, it remains an interesting example of how Microsoft tried to establish its own mascot character on Xbox comparable to Mario or Sonic, though this intention was ultimately never fully realized. The time-manipulation controls, especially replaying a recorded loop to solve puzzles, remain among the most inventive mechanics the platforming genre ever offered on Xbox. The sequel also tried to reach a younger audience with a simpler level structure, making it a more accessible, if less complex, experience than the first Blinx.
