A group of kids shrunk to ant size survives in a backyard; a blade of grass is a log.

Grounded was born from a simple idea: what if a group of kids shrank to the size of an ant and had to survive in an ordinary backyard. Blades of grass become logs, a drop of dew becomes a water supply, and an ordinary spider becomes a nightmare you can only run from. The player gathers resources, builds shelters and later sprawling bases, crafts weapons from ant mandibles, brews potions from mushrooms, and gradually pushes deeper into the yard — toward the pond, the trash pile, the dark tunnels underground. There's a story thread explaining who's behind the shrinking, and the whole game can be played in co-op with up to four people.

Technically, Grounded bets on a readable, stylized look with bold colors instead of photorealism, which helps it keep a smooth pace even when dozens of bugs are swarming on screen. On Series X|S the game loads quickly, and switching between visual and performance modes lets you fine-tune the experience to taste. Sound is unusually important: buzzing, crackling, and rustling hints at what's approaching through the grass, and at night the yard turns into a truly unpleasant place. The developers also thought of arachnophobes and added a slider that gradually strips detail from spiders down to harmless spheres.

The game first came out in early access and reached its full version in 2022, when the complete story and ending arrived. Reviews praised the concept, the clear base-building, and above all how well it works within a group of friends; complaints targeted repetitive activities in the later stages. Today Grounded is one of the most accessible survival games out there — deep enough for genre veterans, yet friendly enough that a younger player can stick with it too. After release, the game kept receiving updates with new areas, enemies, and building options, so a return trip is worthwhile even for those who tried it in its early versions. And if there's one thing Grounded does unmatched, it's shifting scale: after a few hours, you look at an ordinary backyard in a completely different way.
