Grounded
Grounded builds on a simple yet remarkably rich idea: a group of kids is shrunk down to the size of an ant and must survive in a backyard garden. What was once mundane scenery suddenly turns into a dangerous wilderness — a dewdrop becomes a water source, a blade of grass a building material, and an ordinary spider a nightmare you can only run from. It's precisely this change of scale that turns an otherwise familiar survival loop into something distinctive and surprisingly creepy. You can play as any of four characters, and the game keeps a light, adventurous tone despite how merciless the environment is described to be.
The foundation is classic: you gather resources, build a base, cook, upgrade your gear, and gradually venture into more dangerous parts of the yard. But the game also offers a solid story thread — underground labs, scientists' logs, and an explanation for why the shrinking happened in the first place. Combat requires reading your opponent's movements, blocking, and dodging, so a clash with a beetle plays out more like a duel than mindless clicking. Co-op for up to four players is clearly what the game was designed for, and building a nest together high in the grass is one of the best experiences the genre offers. Besides classic survival, it also offers calmer modes where hunger and thirst are no threat, so you can explore the garden purely for the building and discovery.
Visually it leans on stylization with bold colors and soft shapes, which let it run even on Xbox One and also suits its lightly comic-book storytelling. Sound is essential — buzzing, crackling, and the distant footsteps of arthropods make every night a tense affair, and for players with arachnophobia the game offers a slider that reduces spider detail. Grounded spent a long time in early access and grew stronger with every update; in its final form it's one of the most approachable and best-written survival games out there. Special mention goes to the garden map, which unlocks through journal entries and turns gradual wandering into systematic exploration.
