Announced and released the same day; rhythm action where combat syncs to the beat of the music.

Hi-Fi RUSH appeared completely out of nowhere — it was announced and released on the very same day — and within a few hours it became one of the most delightful surprises of the entire generation. The player controls Chai, an aspiring musician, who during a corporate experiment gets an audio player lodged in his chest, turning him into a system defect that the Vandelay corporation wants removed immediately. The core of the gameplay is action-brawling in the spirit of classic Japanese action games, except everything runs on the rhythm of the soundtrack: hits land harder when timed to the beat, dodges and blocks are counted in measures, and even the environment — presses, cranes, traffic lights — moves precisely to the music.

Visually, it's a hand-drawn comic brought into three dimensions, with bold outlines, saturated colors, and animation that plays with caricature. That very style is what let the game run exceptionally smoothly on Series X|S, which is a necessity for rhythm-based action — any stumble would ruin the timing. The sound mix is the star: the soundtrack blends original compositions with licensed rock tracks, and during boss fights the music adapts to how the battle is going. For players who don't feel the rhythm, the developers added visual aids and an assist mode, so the game shuts nobody out.

Reviewers were thrilled by how elegantly it managed to combine two genres that usually have nothing to do with each other, as well as by its light, self-deprecating humor. Hi-Fi RUSH quickly became a textbook example of what a mid-sized project released straight into a subscription service can achieve. Today it still feels fresh and is an ideal choice for anyone who wants a smoothly flowing campaign from an action game without unnecessary padding, clearly readable combat, and a soundtrack you'll still be humming long after finishing it. The campaign is rounded out by allies with their own moves in combat, gradual unlocking of new techniques, and arena challenges for those who want to truly master the system. The future of Tango Gameworks was uncertain after release, which only makes the game stand out more as a reminder that originality pays off.
