Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 drops players into Night City as a desperate nomad, a corporate errand-runner, or a street kid into whose head the digital imprint of a dead rock legend gets implanted. That's where the game's central tension comes from: time pressure, personal disintegration, and a city that offers far more distraction than is healthy. It plays as a first-person shooter with a deep RPG layer on top. Cybernetic implants change the style of play far more radically than mere stat numbers: one player might slip through a building via networks and disable cameras, another might blast through a wall, and a third might cut their way close-up with a monofilament whip. The side character quests rank among the best-written content in modern RPGs.
On Xbox Series X|S, the game arrived in native form only in 2022, when a major update brought improved lighting, denser traffic, and performance and quality modes including ray tracing. It's precisely this version that finally matches how the city was supposed to look from the start: rain on neon signs, reflections in shop windows, and crowds that feel dense. Loading is short thanks to the SSD, and fast travel is essentially instant. The sound design is by far the strongest part of the atmosphere — radio stations, synthesizer loops, and aggressive guitar tracks define the mood of each district just as much as the architecture does.
The game's 2020 launch was marred by technical problems, especially on the older console generation, and the brand went through a very rough period as a result. The following years, however, brought a fundamental overhaul of the police system, skills, and cybernetic gear, and with the Phantom Liberty expansion, a cohesive espionage story that many consider the high point of the entire game. Today Cyberpunk 2077 is a showcase of what a long-term fix of a major project looks like. Anyone picking it up now gets a vast, technically solid, and remarkably well-written RPG whose greatest strength remains the city itself.
