Batman: Arkham Knight
Batman: Arkham Knight concluded Rocksteady's trilogy and was the first entry in the series built exclusively for the Xbox One generation. Gotham has been evacuated, Scarecrow is threatening the city with toxin, and a mysterious Arkham Knight enters the fray, someone who knows Batman's methods uncomfortably well. For the first time, the entire city is available in one seamless piece, with no loading between districts, and players traverse it by gliding, grapple hook, and above all the Batmobile. It isn't just a vehicle but also a combat machine, a puzzle tool, and a component of almost every major mission, so the driving and on-foot sections constantly intertwine.
Combat builds on the proven freeflow system, where the rhythm of strikes, counters, and dodges becomes an almost musical affair. New additions include combined takedowns with allies, smarter enemies with different armor types, and expanded predator rooms where Batman hangs from gargoyles and picks off armed guards one by one. Side plots with the Riddler, Two-Face, or Firefly offer dozens of extra hours of content, and the puzzles rank among the toughest in the series. The heavy presence of tank battles against drones sparked debate, as some players found them too frequent and repetitive, even though they gradually grow more complex with new enemy types.
Technically, this was a very convincing showcase on console: rainy streets mirror neon signs, and particles, smoke, and volumetric lighting give Gotham a dense noir atmosphere. The music works with dark string sections and helps build the feeling that the city is collapsing and that this time things might not turn out well. While the PC version launched with a reputation for significant technical problems, the console release was received very well and reviews were high. Today, Arkham Knight remains one of the best-looking and smoothest superhero games ever made, and its take on Gotham has inspired the entire genre. Anyone who finished the previous entries gets a dignified, grim send-off here.
