Moscow's metro after the apocalypse, where bullets double as currency.

Metro 2033 took the player into the Moscow metro after a nuclear apocalypse, where surviving humanity lives in stations threatened by mutants as well as ideological conflicts between factions fighting for control of the tunnels. Playing as young Artyom, sent to warn a friendly station of the threat known as the Dark Ones, the player travels through dark tunnels where ammunition is scarce and doubles as currency, forcing careful consideration of every shot fired and favoring a stealthy approach over open firefights in darkness lit only by a flashlight. The surface of Moscow, contaminated by radiation and haunted by supernatural beings, offered short but immensely atmospheric excursions where you had to keep an eye on your gas mask's air supply and change the filter in time before losing consciousness.

On Xbox 360 the game technically impressed with a dense atmosphere built through light, shadow, and sound - the crackling of the gas mask, distant voices in the stations, and oppressive music created a sense of constant threat, heightened further by the need to conserve both ammunition and mask filters. The level design drew on a linear but carefully told style with minimal on-screen indicators, where action sequences alternated with quiet, almost adventure-like sections full of dialogue and world-building drawn from Dmitry Glukhovsky's source novel, from which the game also drew a number of characters, factions, and key locations of the Moscow metro.

At the time the game was praised above all by critics for its atmosphere and technical execution, though its higher difficulty and lower tolerance for mistakes showed in weaker initial sales. Today Metro 2033 is regarded as one of the most atmospheric post-apocalyptic titles of its generation, and its influence is evident throughout the subsequent Metro series, which has built a loyal and still-growing fanbase over the years.

Why play it: For its atmosphere and technical execution, despite its higher difficulty and lower tolerance for mistakes, it ranks among the most atmospheric post-apocalyptic titles of its generation.
