Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers from The Behemoth brought a colorful, humor-packed tribute to classic '90s arcade beat 'em ups to Xbox Live Arcade, enriched with modern RPG elements. Four knights must rescue kidnapped princesses and avenge an evil wizard's invasion of their kingdom, with the journey passing through varied settings from forests to desert ruins full of strange enemies and grotesque bosses. The studio had previously made a name for itself with Alien Hominid, and the same love of hand-drawn animation and absurd detail — with which the scenes are literally overflowing — is on display here too.

Four-player co-op, whether local or online, was one of the game's main draws, creating chaotic yet immensely fun battles with dozens of enemies on screen at once. Combat looks simple but offers surprising depth: combinations of light and heavy strikes, launching opponents into the air and following up with juggles, elemental magic attacks, and collected animal companions that passively boost stats or gather gold. The experience and leveling system let characters power up their stats and unlock new spells, while a wide roster of playable knights and secret characters, from a frog to the Orange Knight, encouraged repeated playthroughs. A fishing minigame and arena duels added variety outside the main campaign, as did the hunt for dozens of weapons hidden in the side paths of each level.

Artist Dan Paladin's distinctive hand-drawn art style, blending cuteness with absurd dark humor, gave the game an unmistakable identity, underscored by a catchy electronic soundtrack. Critics especially praised the fun co-op and charismatic humor. Castle Crashers became one of the best-selling titles on Xbox Live Arcade, proving that the beat 'em up genre still had a firm place on modern consoles. The game was later released on other platforms as well as in an enhanced remastered version, and remains one of the first recommendations when someone's looking for a simple game to play with friends on one couch.
